A Brief History
First built in 1973, the Volkswagen Passat is one of the world’s best selling family sedans. First based off the Audi 80, the car sports a sleek, aerodynamic design, the Passat was named for the German word for trade wind. The second generation B2 Volkswagen Passat was was released in 1981, and showcased a newer, larger and faster model. Even more streamlined than it’s predecessor, the B2 was nimble and efficient with the change in body shape and parts. Volkswagen also introduced a four wheel drive setup for this model paired with the 5-speed gearbox. It’s powered by a 135hp 2.2L petrol engine, or the 80hp 1.6L diesel.
Later, the B4 saw a massive redesign for the Volkswagen Passat. Not only in body shape, Volkswagen also now integrated a turbocharged direct injection diesel engine, which managed to pass the 100hp mark for the diesel.
The B5 Volkswagen Passat hit the European market in 1997 and shared a platform with the Audi A4. Bringing more upscale interiors and better safety features, the Passat really made its mark for buyers looking for a mid-size car, and still remains one of the best models to drive.
The VW Passat was revolutionised again in 2005 with the B6 when engineers decided to use an elongated Golf platform for this range and fitting a transversely mounted, Fuel Stratified Injection engine. The quality of interiors and parts really took a step up with this model, and Volkswagen introduced a 4Motion Haldex Traction multi-plate clutch for the 4×4 version, which was able to split torque 50:50 between the axles as required.
2014 saw the VW Passat upgrade into the B8 with many modern extras and parts like emergency assist, trailer assist and traffic jam assist, which lets the driver sit while the car drives itself through traffic jams. The B8 Passat also saw that all petrol engines now have BlueMotion technology and develop between 124 and 276 hp, while the diesel ones offer between 118 and 237 hp. Selective catalytic reduction systems (SCR) are present on the most powerful 2.0-liter TDI engines (187 and 237 hp).
